Democratic Leaders Respond to Governor Youngkin’s Budget Presentation
Richmond, VA — Democratic leaders today extended their appreciation to Governor Glenn Youngkin for presenting his budget proposal to the Joint Money Committees. They emphasized their commitment to evaluating the proposals with an open mind and focus on bipartisan solutions.
Speaker Don Scott, Appropriations Chair Luke Torian, House Democratic Leader Charniele Herring, and Caucus Chair Kathy Tran underscored the importance of ensuring the final budget addresses the pressing needs of Virginians, including investments in education, public safety, and affordable housing.
“As we review the Governor’s budget, our focus will remain on targeted investments that benefit all Virginians,” said House Appropriations Chair Delegate Luke Torian. “We will explore how we can work across the aisle to ensure K-12 schools are fully funded, higher education is accessible, and affordable housing becomes a reality for more families. These are areas where we can and should find common ground.”
“We thank Governor Youngkin for presenting his budget and initiating this important conversation,” said Speaker Don Scott. “Now, our responsibility is to evaluate these proposals thoughtfully and collaboratively to ensure they reflect the priorities of all Virginians. We can craft a budget that strengthens our schools, supports our communities, and provides real solutions for working families.”

The General Assembly will now review the Governor’s proposed amendments during the upcoming 2025 legislative session starting on January 8, 2025. The public and stakeholders will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the Governor’s proposed amendments to the 2024-2026 biennium budget during virtual regional public hearings held on January 3, 2025.
