Budget and Special Session Update
I am happy to announce that after months of discussion, the House of Delegates and the state Senate conferees have agreed upon a revised budget for the current 2024 fiscal year. We created a budget that makes significant investments in education, natural resources, and jobs.
The budget includes a one-time rebate check of $200 (individual filers) and $400 (joint filers) for those who filed their taxes earlier this year. We are proposing an increase of $645.3 million in state support for public education funding. We are investing $155.6 million into mental health services, including crisis receiving centers, community-based children’s mental health services, and targeted pay raised for all Community Services Board staff. The budget also includes an additional 2% pay raise for all state employees and a reinstatement of the “sales state tax” that will be held the third weekend of October.
The House of Delegates and the Senate will meet on September 6th in Richmond. On this day, we will review and vote on the final passage of the revised budget. To watch us live, you can visit virginiageneralassembly.gov.
